The Peruvian candidate to the Organization of American States (OAS) General Secretariat, Ambassador Hugo de Zela, concluded his first tour to the Caribbean countries within the framework of the campaign for the election scheduled for next March.
Ambassador De Zela held meetings in Saint Lucia with the Prime Minister and Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Peruvian candidate also met with the Foreign Affairs Ministers of Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago, as well as CARICOM authorities.
Ambassador De Zela and the Caribbean authorities agreed in underscoring the need to make the OAS more effective in solving conflicts, with concrete results, as well as in building consensus based on dialogue. They concurred that regional cooperation in the areas of inclusive development and hemispheric security needs to be strengthened, with emphasis on prevention of natural disasters, an increasing threat in the Caribbean and the South Pacific.
